This website is an independent visitor guide to Mount Barker and the Porongurup in Western Australia’s Great Southern. It is not the official Mount Barker Visitor Centre, not a Shire of Plantagenet publication, and not a Parks and Wildlife brochure. The domain is historic. The writing is new.
If you need today’s opening hours, a paper map, or help with a vacancy, go to the visitor centre in the 1923 railway station on Albany Highway, or use the Shire of Plantagenet’s own visitor pages. Those desks exist to answer live questions. This site exists to help you decide what kind of day you are trying to have before you get there.
Why the domain was rebuilt
mountbarkertourismwa.com.au collected real tourism pages for many years: attractions, accommodation, around-town notes, winery names, and Porongurup files in .htm, .html, and .aspx forms. Later, unrelated spam occupied some paths. This rebuild keeps the clean heritage topics, rewrites them from official and regional sources, and refuses the spam. Casino and plinko URLs, diploma-mill pages, and similar junk return 410. Messy file extensions 301 to a clean path.
The quality bar is the depth and rhythm of a Capes-tier independent guide: a long homepage that answers how to plan, hub pages that choose rather than list, and FAQs that put the direct answer first. The colours are this district’s — granite, riesling gold, jarrah, morning — not a copy of another coast.
What we will not invent
No prices, except a pointer to official park-fee pages. No operator phone numbers copied from a 2006 table. No winery awards. No “best of” rankings. No quotes from unnamed travellers. No festival line-up. Heritage business names are labelled as historical listings. If a fact cannot be tied to a public authority or a regional body, it stays out.
Who the writing is for
Self-drive visitors coming south from Perth or north from Albany. Walkers who have heard of the Granite Skywalk and want to know whether it is the right walk. Wine travellers who know the words Great Southern and want the Mount Barker and Porongurup GIs explained. People who remember an old page on this domain and want the topic back without the pop-ups.
Editorial standards
Sources we trust on this site include the Shire of Plantagenet, the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (Explore Parks WA), Trails WA, Wine Australia’s GI register, Great Southern Wine Region, Tourism Western Australia, and the Heritage Council of WA. When those sources disagree about a kilometre or a date, we say so or we omit the number.
Corrections are welcome through the contact form. Contributors should read write for us. The legal position of names and trademarks is on the disclaimer and in the footer of every page.
This is a planning draft you can read in a city the week before you travel. It is not a permit, a ticket, or a local.
How this site is made
Content lives in Keystatic collections — pages, guides, FAQs, and heritage listings — and is rendered through Markdoc. That sounds like machinery. The reason it matters to a reader is that the long essays are real files, not empty CMS shells. If a paragraph is here, someone wrote it for this rebuild.
The information architecture follows the brief: attractions, around town, Porongurup, wineries, accommodation, activities, gallery, FAQ, about, and contact, plus the clean heritage slugs that deserved to remain places rather than redirects. Messy extensions 301. Spam 410.
The palette is local on purpose. Porongurup granite, Riesling gold, jarrah, and morning paper. It is not a lighthouse red. It is not a borrowed coast.
What “independent” means in practice
Independent means we do not take a booking commission on these pages. It means a winery cannot buy a higher slot. It means a festival cannot buy a date. It means the footer disclaimer is not decoration. It also means we can be wrong, and we will correct from official sources when we are.
Independent does not mean hostile to the visitor centre. The railway-station desk is the right place for the live question. We say so on the About page because the domain name sounds official and is not.
Readers we had in mind
A couple driving south from Perth who have one spare day and have heard of a skywalk. A walker coming north from Albany who needs to know whether Castle Rock is the right length. A wine traveller who knows the words Great Southern and wants the Mount Barker GI explained without a sales pour. Someone who typed a 2006 URL and needs to land on a clean page that still answers the old topic.
If you are a local and you see a civic fact that has moved, send the new official source. If you are a business and you want a review, this is the wrong site.
The spam we will not restore
Later years parked casino, plinko, and diploma-mill paths on this domain. Those URLs are excluded. They are not part of Mount Barker’s tourism story. Keeping them would be a different kind of dishonesty.
A last orientation
Read the homepage if you have not chosen a day type. Read Porongurup if the granite is the reason you came. Read wineries if the GI is the reason. Read around town if you are trying to place Albany. Read about — this page — if you wondered whether we were the visitor centre. We are not. We are a guide. Use both.
